CNN -
In August 2019, Saul Malek understood he 'd strike rock bottom.

His girlfriend had broken up with him, friendships had gone south, and he had money issues.

" I observed all my memories were truly betting related," Malek explains to CNN Sport.

" If I went out with my sweetheart and some pals, I 'd tell her at the end of the night, 'This is a terrific night due to the fact that this bet won, and I was up this amount.'"

In a last-ditch effort to resurrect his relationship with his girlfriend, Malek states he informed his Gamblers Anonymous coach that he wouldn't place a bet for six months. Almost five years later, Malek still hasn't wager.

' This is easy'
The billions of dollars that were wagered on this year's Super Bowl, the millions that will be wagered on Saturday's Kentucky Derby and stories like Malek's have brought into sharp focus the US' complicated relationship with sports betting.

It was in his college sophomore year that Malek states he was presented to an illegal accountant.

" It was absolutely dirty in regards to the legality and legitimacy of all of it, however I didn't actually care," he said.

" I enjoyed betting with the bookmakers because I liked understanding that I was winning versus a real individual, that you know I was better than them."

Malek clearly remembers his very first $10 win.

" It was an overall warping of my mind," said Malek. "I understand what I'm doing. This is easy, this is great."

However, $10 bets ended up being $100 wagers, which rapidly morphed into stakes involving thousands of dollars.

" When I actually began losing and chasing after the losses, I had an awareness that it was unpleasant," admitted Malek.

" But I think I remained in such a mode of trying to solve everything that I didn't see it as truly much of a problem."

It wasn't up until his parents observed "sketchy individuals messaging him," and his school grades ending up being a problem that Malek, who is now a speaker on betting awareness, understood he was in too deep.

A 'massive explosion'
It remained in 2018 that the US Supreme Court struck down a 1992 federal law, which had actually restricted most states from allowing sports betting.

Fast forward to 2024 and the gambling industry is engrained in US with leagues, franchises, gamers and networks now partnering with betting organizations.

Nevada was the lone state able to offer sports wagering in 2018, however it's now legal in 38 states and the District of Columbia, with active legislation surrounding sports betting in a more six states.

In February, when the Super Bowl was staged, Americans wager $10.49 billion on sports, a 24.8% year-over-year increase, according to the American Gaming Association's (AGA) video gaming earnings tracker.

Ahead of the Super Bowl, the AGA was anticipating a record 67.8 million American grownups (26%) would bet an approximated $23.1 billion on the event, a 35% increase from 2023.

And, overall, almost $120 billion in legal bets were made last year.

" In America, as long as there have been sports to bank on, individuals have been banking on sports," AGA senior vice president Joe Maloney informed CNN Sport in an interview.

" Democrats and Republicans, if there's something that they could agree on, prohibited betting was currently happening."

Maloney says the 2018 choice was an opportunity to bring betters into the legal market - and for politicians to record tax revenue.

In 2023, more than $11 billion in state taxes were brought into state coffers.

According to the US Census, New York state is without a doubt the leader in taxes gathered.

" There was this rush by state government, rather frankly, to take advantage of betting revenue and the gaming industry was happy to play along," Keith Whyte, executive director of the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), told CNN Sport.

The legal market
It's estimated that 2.5 million grownups in the US "satisfy the requirements for a severe gambling problem in a given year," according to the NCPG.

Maloney preserves that one of the advantages of legalized sports gambling is the steps that are put in place to help those who suffer with gambling dependencies.

" The illegal market has flourished for most likely 4 to five decades in this country ... and there was never any issue gambling resources at any severe level to support those that are showing bothersome habits," Maloney states.

" We're actually proud of the reality that ... there's more money being committed to problem betting in this nation than there ever has been."

Whyte says he is less persuaded.

" We've seen no proof of that whatsoever," states Whyte when inquired about legalized sports gambling assisting curb gambling addiction. "We believe the threat has gone up by about 30%."

" I'm in the District of Columbia today. The mayor recently cut every single cent of public funding to avoid and treat betting issues.

So right where the AGA and the National Council for Problem Gambling lies - the nation's capital - they abolished all public funds for issue gaming," includes Whyte.

' The rate of development'
From LeBron James' NFL collaboration with DraftKings to ESPN launching an official sportsbook, it is becoming increasingly hard to enjoy sport without gambling being part of the seeing experience.

A 2023 NCAA study surveyed young people aged 18-22. It states that among those who had seen sports betting advertisements, 52.8% stated it made them more most likely to want to bet.

Among greater threat bettors as lots of as 80% say the ads they have seen make them most likely to bet.

Whyte says that these ads aren't excessive of an issue if you're not in the higher threat groups but the connection amongst those who are is concerning.

Maloney counters that advertising is vital in taking bettors from prohibited to legal markets.

" Advertising is very crucial upon markets being opened lawfully and managed to communicate to betters that there is this opportunity to now bet in the legal market," said Maloney.

The increase of advertisements and promotions is something that worries NBA commissioner Adam Silver.

" I live in the New York market. It's consistent in regards to promos for individuals to bank on sports," said Silver recently.

" I worry also about youths. It's, naturally, prohibited for youths to bet on sports," added the commissioner.

Ramon Zelaya, the moderator of Reddit's issue betting forum, concurs.

" The explosion of sports wagering has actually recorded the attention and engagement of younger bettors. Folks beginning in their teenagers," Zelaya told the NCPG.

" I've had 16-year-olds publish on the subreddit. I have discovered that the college age group tends to gravitate towards sports betting, online poker, trading cryptocurrency, that sort of thing."

Despite Silver's hand-wringing over the expansion of sports wagering advertisements, the NBA in March stated it had actually joined up with Sportradar to offer NBA League Pass users with the chance to take a look at live chances throughout games.

" Where sports wagering is legal, users can opt-in to have the benefit of viewing and picking bets directly on NBA League Pass. When ready to position a bet, they are directed to FanDuel or DraftKings, the NBA's main wagering partners, through a perfectly embedded link," the Sportradar statement checked out.

Malek believes that this absence of friction threatens.

" Having it right there, really made it so practical that I had the ability to simply click a button," he expained.

Maloney, however, points to the chances technological development uses the betting market and its consumers.

" I think the pace of innovation right now, especially as it relates to fan engagement and betting, and in play betting and live betting will continue to increase," stated Maloney.

" I believe that the embrace with leagues, teams and industry partners will continue," he added.

Whyte's issue is that many sports gamblers "when they get deep into in play [betting] have no concept of the real chances and that it's nigh difficult to calculate the real chances within the needed 30 seconds you require to place an in-play bet.

The wagering industry also indicates its ongoing emphasis on "responsible betting," stating three quarters of what it refers to as "standard Super Bowl bettors" report seeing an accountable gambling message in the in 2015, up from 71% in 2023.

Sporting stability
Recently the NBA prohibited Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter from the league after an investigation found that the 24-year-old had breached wagering guidelines, the league said.

The NBA stated its investigation found that Porter had "violated league guidelines by disclosing secret information to sports bettors, restricting his own involvement in several video games for betting purposes, and betting on NBA video games."

With the increase of sports betting, this might become more common and it's something that NBA commissioner Silver is worried by.

"It's a cardinal sin, what he's implicated of, in the NBA, and the ultimate extreme choice I have is to prohibit him from the video game," stated Silver.

"There's nothing more severe, I believe, around this league when it pertains to gambling and banking on our games, and that is a direct gamer participation," added Silver.

Porter didn't respond to CNN's ask for comment when his restriction was revealed.

In late March, the NBA stated it was "checking out" anomalies involving prop bets relating to Porter. Reportedly there were two particular games in which DraftKings Sportsbook flagged prop bets involving Porter in its day-to-day wagering insights.

A DraftKings representative informed CNN after Porter was prohibited: "We have no discuss this story. In general, it is essential to keep in mind that a person of the lots of advantages of legal and regulated sports wagering is that sports wagering operators identify and report suspicious activity and the integrity of sport is therefore secured in a way that does not exist in the prohibited market."
